STUDIO III: MANAGING BEHAVIOURS THAT CHALLENGE USING THE LOW AROUSAL METHOD
(Cost includes 16 Clinical & 2 Ethics HPCSA CPD points and 11,5 SACSSP CPD points)
STUDIO III is a specialist research and training organization dedicated to providing high-quality training in the management of aggressive and challenging behavior. STUDIO III advocates for the non-violent, respectful, and dignified management of challenging behavior by utilizing ‘low-arousal’ techniques and gentle physical skills.
Maximum of 28 people for this session. Lunch, for all 3 days, is included in the cost.
PAIN MANAGEMENT IN PEOPLE WITH INTELLECTUAL DISABILITY
Iselle van den Heever is an Occupational Therapist with a special interest in pain management for persons with intellectual disability. Iselle will explain the nature of pain, and what we can do to help manage it.
CARING FOR THE PHYSICALLY ILL PERSON WITH INTELLECTUAL DISABILITY
Maximum of 25 attendees
A psychiatric nurse will share share practical suggestions for managing common symptoms of illness, such as a fever, dehydration, constipation and other symptoms.

A discussion about facilitating self-agency, expression and independence for people with intellectual disability.
SELF-ADVOCACY PROGRAMME: 2025/2026
All adults with intellectual disability are welcome to register to learn to become a Self-Advocate. Current Self-Advocates, who wish to continue with the programme for 2025/2026, must also register to reserve a place in the group, as numbers are limited. Sessions will be held every second month. The sessions are at no cost for a closed group. Note that for a certificate, all sessions have to be completed.

EFFECTIVE USE OF WHEELCHAIRS AND BUGGIES FOR THE CHILD WITH SEVERE TO PROFOUND INTELLECTUAL DISABILITY
This workshop will cover wheelchair and buggy cleaning, positioning and transferring the child.

REGIONAL BIENNIAL INTELLECTUAL DISABILITY MEETING: INCLUSIVE AND COMPLEMENTARY THERAPIES FOR PEOPLE WITH INTELLECTUAL DIABILITY

- The Power of Pet Therapy – The benefits of Animal Assisted Therapy: Gretchen Bains, Occupational Therapist – The Open Circle, and
- Visual Arts Therapy: Janet du Preez, Researcher with a special interest in autism who is currently completing her MA in Art Therapy and Tavia Viglietti, Counsellor and HPCSA-registered Art Therapy MA trainee

UNDERSTANDING GERIATRIC PERSONS WITH INTELLECTUAL DISABILITY

Persons with intellectual disability, especially the elderly, do not present typically and can often be overlooked because of this. In keeping with the Go Turquoise Elderly Campaign on 14 June, Fatiema Ismail will share research and articles on ageing within the intellectual disability population. She will also discuss factors to consider when caring for the geriatric person with intellectual disability.
