Understanding Intellectual Disability
Intellectual disability is one of the most overlooked disabilities in South Africa. It affects the development of the child, starting before the age of 18 years and continues throughout life. There are four levels of intellectual disability: mild; moderate; severe and profound, each with different support needs. The Western Cape Forum for Intellectual Disability (WCFID) has, since its inception in 1971, played a pivotal role in the development of skills, knowledge and advancement of rights within the intellectual disability sector.
As intellectual disability affects the development of the child, it is very important for young children with intellectual disability to receive support as early as possible to assist with their development and participation in society.

To support service providers in the intellectual disability community to ensure a better quality of life for people with intellectual disability in the Western Cape.
